Not an in-depth bio, more of a "general summation" of Rall's activities on the Eastern Front. If you want to know "the basics" about Gunther Rall, this works, but if you want to gain insight on the man, this doesn't cut it.
An exciting account of the second fighter ace of all times.

This book makes an excellent addition to any Luftwaffe library. Rall's characteristic humor and modesty comes through in the text, serving to shed light on the tremendous strength of character needed to survive so many hundreds of aerial combats. All the statistics and unit data concerning Gunther Rall and his aircraft can be found in technical books, this memoir is a much more personal impression of the war and how it affected his life and decisions after it ended. It gives the reader an insight into why he went into the military before WW2 and his perceptions of the politics around him as the German government developed into a dark dictatorship.
His descriptions of meetings with Hitler are fascinating, and his depiction of combat on the Eastern Front reveal a vast and difficult theater of operations to survive in. Of great interest additionally are the revelations of his life after the end of the war, trying to eek out a living with his family in post-war Germany, and finally his work to build a new German Air Force during the fifties from the surviving Luftwaffe commanders. A very important book for aviation enthusiasts to have in their collection, from a truly amazing man.
My husband had asked for this book a few years ago so I surprised him at Christmas with this book. Great book for those wishing to know about a German fighter pilot during and after the WW 2. A gentleman and a hero whose story makes for an enthralling read. A must for any aviation, or military enthusiast. One person found this helpful. I ordered this for my husband.
Günther Rall: A Memoir- Luftwaffe Ace & NATO General by Jill Amadio
I think he was lukewarm about the way it was written. I am not sure, but I believe there is another book out about Gunter Rall that might have had his personal input which could have made a difference. Ms Amadio has produced the only available biography of the renowned Luftwaffe ace Gunther Rall and she has used many memories from the great pilot in her text. The book has many fine black and white photographs and the text is easy to read but there are some serious drawbacks.
Ms Amadio has obviously a limited background on World War II because albeit she gives most of the times a comprehensive synopsis of the war situation she repeats some annoying mistakes, like calling Paulus army "6th Panzer Army", or mistaking for in page , stating that in September the Afrikakorps was about to collapse!

Despite its shortcomings the book remains the best source on Rall and his wartime carreer is covered in satisfying depth as well as his post war activities. See all 25 reviews. Gunther Rall was an amazing human being. He was a fighter pilot that worked his way up through the Luftwaffe. So many questions were answered for me, like "How did the German people feel about what Hitler was doing? For those who were themselves fighter pilots or WWII veterans, please read without prejudice and see what you think by the end of the book.
As for me, I found the battle sequences gripping, as if I were there.
Some of the dogfights were downright scary! There were also recollections of ground conditions in enemy territory and the many obstacles the fighter pilots endured so they could serve their country. After the war there are many revelations to enjoy, but I don't want to post any spoilers.
Just read the book and get a whole new perspective on WWII. You'll appreciate the difficulties of soldiers who were committed to serve their country even when they began to doubt the leadership, and you'll get perspective of the Allied forces including US, Great Britain, and others.
It was a five star read for me, I hope it is for you. There's a problem loading this menu right now. Get fast, free shipping with Amazon Prime.
