We are far greater than a sum of events. What is my purpose? Why am I really here? I have to repeat the quieting down often, otherwise the louder ego-voice society-voice that directs how we should be living drowns it out. Think of the last conversation you had. Did you really listen, like for meaning?
Or were you thinking of your next response as the person was talking? What lies within me is beautiful, magical, whole. What lies within me is goodness and love. What lies within me is where the past came from, where the future is going. What lies within me is the Divine unfolding. Mar 01, Maja Majdak rated it it was amazing.
Living in a remote farmhouse in Devon, and being surrounded by woods, animals and beauty of the nature they have always felt free. But when a dangerous convict escapes from Dartmoor prison nearby, Anna can not help but to feel a prisoner of her own home. She is scared, irrational and starts to feel extremely claustrophobic despite all the space around her. She becomes distant from her loving husband Robert, and has various problems with her son Paul. While finding about Anna and her family, we also get to know the story of a young teacher.
She has just started her first job, and is really enthusiastic and idealistic in everything she does. She tries to help her students to be better and make a difference. While being naive and trying to find the best in people she becomes brutally attacked one night by none other than one of her students. She was the victim, but soon everyone, including her own family starts to doubt her version of this event.
As this two stories converge tension starts to built. The writer has done an amazing job keeping you in the story. Your brain works harder and harder as it tries to figure out things. I have also found myself irritated few times by the things that were happening to a young teacher. There was nothing that impressed me more than Tom Vowlers narrating skills and his style.
Clean, understandable, simple yet impressive and thrilling.
What Lies Within You?
You question, but you are not confused. He composes his sentences like melodies. You feel like you could read this entire book in only a breath. And as you finish you want to start reading it again while telling everyone around you to pick up their own copy and start reading it too. And there is a massive plus in a form of this books cover art!
See a Problem?
Highly recommended s prize winner and bestseller. Many thanks to A. Heath for sending me a copy of this amazing book! Oct 31, Sid Nuncius rated it it was amazing. I thought this was an excellent book. It is well written, intelligent, courageous in the subject matter it tackles and for me utterly gripping. As others here have said, this is mis-categorised as a crime thriller.
It is the story of a terrible crime and its effects on all concerned both immediately afterward and as their lives develop. It really isn't a thriller even though there is some well-executed and genuinely frightening threat later in the book, and it is extremely tense much of the time. Chiefly, it is a thoughtful and insightful study of character and of how it may develop. This may make it sound worthy and dull, but it isn't. It's terrifically readable and very involving, and I found I was as hooked as by any really good thriller.
The narrative is excellently structured and paced, the characters well drawn and very believable and the sense of place on Dartmoor exceptionally well done. Tom Vowler has the sense not to spell everything out, so that the crime itself isn't described at all, just its effects and the victim's actions, thoughts and feelings or lack of them told in plain, un-hysterical language which makes it all the more powerful and disturbing. The passages detailing a medical examination, for example, were completely calmly told yet left me almost trembling. Vowler's prose is excellent: He gets small details exactly right so that dialogue is completely natural, like the way that medical staff use the verb "to pop" - "pop this gown on," "pop your feet into the stirrups" - without clunkily drawing attention to it, which makes the whole thing completely real.
This aspect is excellent throughout. This is one of the best books I have read for some time. Warmly recommended to anyone who likes an thoughtful, intelligent and thoroughly gripping read.
What Lies Within by Tom Vowler
Nov 21, Geoff rated it it was amazing. This came as a real surprise having picked up the book through a Twitter link Set in the beautiful but often eerie wild lands of Dartmoor , the scene is set and two stories run side by side The writing at times is exquisite , certainly no 'wham bam thriller ' it's so much cleverer than that Tom Vowler writes beyond the crime thriller genre displaying a much greater feel for the quality novel often lacking in the 'thriller genre' today and deserves a place on the 'Bestseller' shelves.
Mar 23, Jan Hawke rated it really liked it. I chose this book as it was set in my backyard and I had heard the author talk at a recent bookfest. I was not disappointed.
It was a confidently written debut novel, not without a few surprises. It was interesting that the author chose to write the novel from a female point of view, especially as her experience included a rape and a slightly ambivalent pregnancy. The descriptions of Dartmoor were evocative and authentic, I felt less attached to the characters, however interesting their dilemmas I chose this book as it was set in my backyard and I had heard the author talk at a recent bookfest.
- Oncofertility: Fertility Preservation for Cancer Survivors: 138 (Cancer Treatment and Research);
- The Greatest Stories Ever... Retold.
- Operation Werwolf: Hitlers Revenge.
- On what lies within us by Henry Stanley Haskins (often misattributed to Ralph Waldo Emerson)!
- A Little Way of Homeschooling;
- What Lies Within You? – The Mission – Medium.
The descriptions of Dartmoor were evocative and authentic, I felt less attached to the characters, however interesting their dilemmas. I really look forward to reading more by this author. An excellent read, a debut novel from the author. I couldnt put it down and from the first page I was hooked, but wasnt what I had expected Set mainly on Dartmoor this book deals predominantly with the aftermath of a rape.
Told mainly from the woman's viewpoint I felt it was plausible especially as is written by a mal author. Good characterisation of the family members, however, at first a little confusing as to who is narrating the chapter. I will definately be reading more of Tom Vowlers work An excellent read, a debut novel from the author. I will definately be reading more of Tom Vowlers work. I chose this as 'a book that scares me' for my good reads challenge, however I cant really say it scared me. Apr 18, Nigel rated it really liked it.
I enjoyed this book - fairly tense psychological thriller with some well worked characters and the setting on Dartmoor evoked and used well. I did find I came up with a number of the plot ideas before they emerged in the book but that isn't really a complaint. I guess as a warning in part it is about rape and it felt fairly well done however I'm not sure how valid the view of a male will be in such a subject area.
Good book and I'd read another by the author. A very taught, engaging personal drama, with hints of the thriller about it - think The War Zone, or Coetzee's Disgrace. Vowler has a natural, readable writing style, and he handles the plot twists with intelligence and compassion. His ability to imagine his way inside the head of a female rape victim is also to be commended.
Definitely a name to look out for!
What Lies Within
Aug 09, Sue rated it really liked it. Told mainly from the woman's viewpoint I felt it was plausible. Good characterisation of the family members. The area itself becomes the healer. Liked short description of Plymouth.
Sep 17, Marlieke rated it really liked it. Apr 03, Scribbling-Wren rated it it was amazing Shelves: Really tense debut novel from Tom Vowler.

They can be inspirational but more importantly quotations can help us reveal and assess the assumptions, values and beliefs that underlie the ways in which we perceive the world. I have compiled over quotations and short excerpts on this website.
